Chris Wakelin has taken out O’Sullivan in the English open and ruining any chances of the 1 million pound bonus.
The match was far from pretty for both players but particularly O’Sullivan who struggled throughout the match. His safety was poor, break building was absent and it seemed as though he lost his composure slightly.
As we highlighted in previous tournaments, O’Sullivan doesn’t quite look match fit and although he did well last week reaching the final of the European Masters, he almost looks fatigued and uninterested.
But hats off to Wakelin, who capitalized on the poor performance from O’Sullivan.
In the first frame O’Sullivan looked good, compiling an impressive 110 break and then won the second frame, although scrappy.
Wakelin then started his comeback, taking the third and fourth frames with a 106 in the fourth.
What a frame we had in the 6th as Ronnie O’Sullivan compiled a 58 point lead. Just as it looked as if O’Sullivan would win the frame, another easy miss let Wakelin in. Wakelin cleared up to the blue but required the pink to win the match. He missed a relatively straight forward pot and after a couple of safety shots, O’Sullivan was presented with a chance to win the frame which he took.
The final frame was a disastrous one for the rocket as a poor break off by O’Sullivan gifted Wakelin with the first opportunity. After he managed to go 47 points ahead of Ronnie, Wakelin broke down and gave O’Sullivan a relatively easy chance, but a simple miss from him gifted the match to Wakelin.
