Snooker: Rocket and Whirlwind set up second round clash at Northern Ireland Open

Ronnie O’Sullivan and Jimmy White have both beaten their first round opponents to set up a second round clash that promises to bring the house down.

O’Sullivan beat David John 4-1 in style yesterday, making two centuries along the way. Later in the evening Jimmy White beat Gareth Allen 4-2 in a somewhat scrappy match.

Both of these players are highly popular among snooker fans. Jimmy White who is 54 now, was once the most popular player on the circuit back in the late 80’s early 90’s. A six time World Championship runner up, the Whirlwind never managed to win the title despite winning everything else in the game. Ronnie O’Sullivan is today’s most iconic player and has dominated for over two decades with five World titles and numerous ranking titles.

The pair of Londoners will now meet on Wednesday evening in the second round. This is a clash that promises to have a full crowd as these two iconic players go at it on the baize. Clearly the momentum will be with O’Sullivan given his recent form but Jimmy White knows O’Sullivan’s game as they are regularly playing together in exhibitions around the world.

Elsewhere John Higgins has continued his form from the last two weeks after winning the China Championship and more recently the Champion of Champions. Higgins had a whitewash win over Paul Davison 4-0. Can he make it a hat-trick, winning three events in a row?

Snooker fans will have noticed the absence of big names such as Judd Trump, Ali Carter, Neil Robertson and Mark Selby to name a few. It’s unclear why each individual didn’t want to play but it’s safe to assume most want some rest and practice for the upcoming UK championships which get under way towards the end of the month.
